THE SEASONAL NOTEBOOK

Beyond
the summer.

Travelling outside the height of summer is not about finding the same holiday with fewer people. It is about choosing a different kind of holiday altogether.

Spring is a beginning

Build a spring stay around what does not depend on a beach day: gardens, architecture, long walks and the pleasure of being outside. A warmer afternoon is a welcome addition, not the condition on which the trip succeeds.

Autumn asks you inland

For an Istrian autumn, food and the hinterland can be the main event. A coastal base still gives you the sea, but the richer itinerary may be among hill towns, producers and good tables. September can remain lively; choose dates for what you want to experience rather than a blanket promise of quiet.

“Do not chase summer into another month. Let another season be itself.”

Winter needs a good base

For a winter coastal break, Opatija is worth considering for its seafront walks and town setting. Prioritise a comfortable room, confirmed dining and an indoor alternative. Wind, rain and seasonal closures deserve a place in the plan.

Be specific about quiet

A festival weekend, a cruise call or a public holiday can change the mood of any destination. Check actual dates. Ask what will be open. A quieter trip is made through thoughtful choices, not through the calendar alone.
