Istria.
Begin with the sea, then turn towards the hills. Istria rewards the traveller who leaves room for a smaller road, a conversation with a producer and a table without a deadline.
Beyond the view
Motovun rises above the Mirna valley; Rovinj turns its old streets towards the sea. Rather than rushing between them, choose a base that matches the kind of stay you want: coastal walks and town life, or a quieter country retreat.
Let the table lead
A thoughtful Istrian day might pair one producer visit with one long lunch. Autumn brings particular interest in truffles and newly pressed olive oil. Harvests are living events, not scheduled performances: ask what is actually happening during your dates.
The luxury of staying put
Our preference is a well-chosen room, attentive hospitality and an itinerary with gaps. An estate near Bale and a town-centre stay in Rovinj offer very different experiences. Choose for the setting and seasonal facilities, not just the photograph.
“One producer. One good table. Nothing after lunch.”
Before you go
Inland visits are easier with your own transport or a pre-arranged driver. Reserve tastings and lunches, check winter opening days and leave time for narrow roads. Never combine a wine tasting with driving.
